Hello, my name is Greg Morris I’m America's Product Application Specialist for greases, and I provide technical support for our large fleet customers and transport OEMs specific to grease.

Today we're going to discuss how to choose the right grease.

For anyone who has been in a shop. You've probably stuck your finger in grease and let it string between them. it takes us back to being a kid. Funny enough, people develop an almost emotional attachment to the grease they use. Some of that can be attributed to how it feels.

The question is, does it really matter how it feels?

In a strange way, it does. But that's not the whole story. Both lubricating oils and greases have performance additives, such as:

Antioxidants, to make them resist the effects of heat

and anti-corrosion packages that inhibit surface rust of the components.

However, greases have a thickener usually a metallic soap that essentially forms a matrix
that suspends the base oil and the grease.

It is this thickener that allows grease to do what we expect.
Seal the application and stay in place, allowing for extended service intervals.

The tacky feel of the grease is what most people connect with performance, both staying in place and creating an effective seal.

Choosing the Right Grease Based on Application

Product selection for grease begins with the application, the type of contact, the speed, load and operating temperatures, and sometimes the ambient temperature for mobility considerations.

Whether a specific grease is suitable for an application is driven by the physical performance of the thickener viscosity and the performance additives that go into the selected grease.
